What is Fair to ask of our Employer Today?
What is fair to ask of our employers today? We are in an era fueled by technology of immediate and swift change which translates into “something can become old news before it even hits your news feed”. If this is so, how can employers keep up and “woo” our love?
Don’t waste our time
Employers can win some love by ensuring their learning opportunities are meaningful. Since the point of professional learning sessions is to develop your workforce, employees want to feel worth the investment by their employer. I have sat in several professional development sessions that were useful as team building and that’s it. The content did not have a purpose or connection to me or my job duties therefore the intended objectives were not met. Truthfully, this becomes an expensive way to team build if there is not an extension of utility beyond the time spent in the learning session.Customizing To Me is Caring
Beyond our job functions, employees are people too. We can customize our selections in every part of our lifestyle therefore to woo our love this needs to be extended in the workplace. Employers should provide annual options of learning opportunities and choices that satisfy the interests of their employees including learning for advancement pathways in their organization. People are moving away from traditional information experiences and gravitating towards those at their finger tips such as: on-demand, binge, sampling, and micro experiences. Why couldn’t our employee learning experience be similar?Give me an Expert
Employees are educated and we know if our experience is one created by an expert or a substitute. If we are going to stay with an organization and feel like we are valued and invested in, then seek an expert at learning. To find the right learning solutions for your organization look to ask these questions:
What are our skill gaps and what annual training should we have? What are the learning takeaways that we can implement in our organization? What are the strategic and long-term benefits to the organization, employees, and stakeholders? Finally, we all are looking for love (even in our workplace). Do employees in your organization say, “I love my employer” in conversation? Maybe if we address the lack of customized learning we can change the conversation.
