Palliative Care: Measurement and Evaluation Tools
Palliative care can be defined as a specialized type of holistic care for individuals who have been diagnosed with a life limiting illness. An example would be when a patient is diagnosed with brain cancer. That can be very traumatizing, so palliative care would assist individuals and perhaps families with, but not limited to, medical services, mental and/or spiritual guidance.
The ultimate goal of palliative care is to help individuals and their families improve their quality of life. This can be achieved by having an interdisciplinary team encompassing doctors, nurses, social workers, spiritual advisors, bereavement support workers, caregivers and other professional disciplines that are focused on this common goal.
